Great Mummy Quest

Introduction

Welcome, young apprentice!  My name is Stanphir the Embalmer.  I will be your teacher as you learn the art of mummification.  You haven't much time to learn this art.  Our great King is dying and you must be ready to help with his burial.  I have much to do so I must trust that you will use these papers I leave you to learn the art.  If you learn well, you will be richly rewarded by the King's family, but if you fail.... Well, don't let that happen.

Task

Your task, as an apprentice to Stanphir the Embalmer, is to read the papers he has left you and learn about mummification.  Tasks will be included to see if you have understood Stanphir's papers.  If you perform these tasks well, you will be given a golden reward, an embalmer's certificate, and your life.

The Process

Please follow these steps to become a master embalmer.

What are mummies?
How are mummies made?
What items did they use to make a mummy?
What was a funeral mask and how did they cover the faces with one?
Who was Tutankhamen?
Why did people want to be mummified ?
Read The British Museum -Ancient Egypt - Mummification to find out the steps of mummification and then do this sequencing activity to prove your knowledge.  You may also use any other sites found in the Resources below.

An introduction that tells why the Ancient Egyptians mummified bodies.
A step-by-step description of the embalming process.
You can use the sequencing activity as a guide.
A conclusion about what you liked most about learning
about mummification.

Your brochure will be graded on this rubric.

Extensions

Read "Egyptian Cinderella," an Egyptian short story by Sherry Climo and Croco'nile by Roy Gerrard.   Create a Venn diagram or other visual organizer to compare and contrast the Egyptian version to the more familiar Brothers Grimm version.
